Board of Trustees Supports Building Expansion Fundraising

The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Pleasant Valley Free Library takes place at 7:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month.  Here are some of the highlights from the September meeting.

NYS Senator Saland in a member item gave out grants to a number of local libraries, and Pleasant Valley will receive $9,100.  Daniela Pulice, Library Director, recommended that $2,000 of that money be used for technology upgrades that may be needed when the Mid-Hudson system goes to a faster Internet system next year, and that the remainder be donated to the Building Fund.  Ardith Orr, head of the Building Expansion committee, is developing a request to both Sen. Saland and Representative Molinaro that will ask for additional NYS grants for specific purposes.

Later in the meeting, Daniela recommended that the Friends of the Pleasant Valley Library  commit to a donation of $3,000 per year for the next five years to the Building Fund.  At present, the Building Fund has one definite pledge for $5,000 from a patron, also to be given over five years.  Pledges are important as for many purposes, since pledged money can be counted as if it were already in hand.

The library has been working with a short staff lately, but circulation remains very high.  One way to look at this is that our full- and part-time is the equivalent of four full-time staff, but we are handling the same amount of circulation as another local library that has 15 full-time staff working for it.

The Board agreed to an annual Building Expansion fundraising letter to be sent to all post-office patrons in Pleasant Valley and Salt Point zip codes.  We hope to get that out in the next month or two.

The Board also agreed to try out an email newsletter service that would send emails to all patrons whose addresses we have. This would be used to detail events at the library, to report on activities of the Friends, and as part of our general fundraising activity for Building Expansion.
