I got a note a few of days ago from a Library patron who has become involved in the effort to raise funds for Building Expansion of the Library. She said, "My neighbor friend across the street came over Thursday evening and took a full station wagon of my sorted trash to add to her yard sale this weekend. ...They upped a lot of my prices, did a remarkable display job, sold most of the larger pieces, and are storing the rest for another sale in about three weeks, when I will have sorted out more 'good stuff' for them. There are two reasons I am doing this. I want to live in less clutter...and I am also earmarking the proceeds from the sales of the castoffs to the Pleasant Valley Library Building Fund....Here's hoping the next sale goes as well or better! How can we get more people to think of creative ways to contribute to the greatest cause in the Valley?"
Since then this friend of the Building Fund conducted the second yard sale for the Building Fund and raised more than twice as much as from the first one. It helped keep prices high when one of the buyers learned that the proceeds were going to help the Library expand.
I am very impressed and delighted to pass this idea along to the readers of this blog.
By the way, the Building Fund team will have information about Library Expansion available at the Friends Book Sale this coming weekend (September 13-14). The Friends are selling paperback books for 50 cents each, a real bargain. The sale, from 10 to 4 on Saturday and from 11 to 3 on Sunday, will be on the front lawn of the Library or in the Reading Room in case of inclement weather. Hope to see you there.

As I write this the library sale is already over; hope it went well. That library patron has a good point about donating stuff for a library book sale or another sale and donate the proceeds. Sometimes it's not worth the trouble to have a yard sale, especially if you're only going to make about 50 bucks (that happened to us once). Better to donate to something larger and already organized. Hopefully you'll get a lot of donations for the spring sale.
