I am happy to report that Daniela (our Library Director) has learned that most of the County funding for libraries has been restored by legislative action. Now that is not final, since the County Executive--a Pleasant Valley resident--can still veto line items in the legislative budget. Often the legislature then overrides the veto, but we cannot count on that. So it looks as if we will be okay at the County level, but it is not sure.
Furthermore, the County money does not go directly to the community libraries--it goes to the Mid-Hudson Libraries, which then redistributes it in sort of a potlatch. If the total amount is not the same as last year, library directors will have to fight each other for their share of the allocation.
In hard times, everything is more complicated.
