Not only are we going to have a multitude of good books for our spring Book Fair, but next week we will clear the basement of some of our best books for the Holiday Sale. That begins on November 20 and will last through the holiday period. When the books are sorted, the ones that might be suitable for gifts are reserved for this annual event. In these troubled economic times, there are few bargains better than a $30 or $40 hardcover book in perfect condition for only $2. We urge all to visit the sale in the Reading Room, which is just to the right as you enter the front door of the Library. Someone from the Friends will be in the room to assist you most of the time. If needed, members of the Library Staff are also available at the desk.
Donated books are a great asset to the Friends, who use the money raised from their sale to help the Library in many ways. The computer in the Children's Room is one of many gifts to the library from the Friends, made possible by donated books. Currently the Friends are planning to use their income to help the Library make necessary repairs on the Manse.
Although donated books are the bread-and-butter of Friends' fundraising, if you are planning to donate used books, make sure that they are suitable for recycling. Old reference books have often outlived their usefulness, for example, and textbooks are generally specific to courses. Good novels, romances, nonfiction, biographies, and so forth in good condition are always in demand, however.
In addition to donating recyclable books (or CDs) to the Friends, consider donating money to the Building Fund. This is best done by donating through the Community Fund of Dutchess County and specifying that your donation goes to the Pleasant Valley Free Library Donor Building Fund.
